Lifestyle factors, environmental toxins and nutrient deficiencies are having a negative impact on our thyroid function, and this is leading to a growing epidemic of thyroid disease. Without adequate levels of key minerals, like selenium, which is required co-factor for enzymes that convert the inactive hormone T4 to the more active T3 hormone, the body cannot produce enough thyroid hormone, which affects virtually all bodily functions, from metabolism to reproduction.
The health implications of these deficiencies are providing a strategic opportunity for new evidence-based supplements. Seeing the potential, Ortho Molecular Products, a leading manufacturer of supplements for the professional channel, has developed two formulas: Thyrotain, an exemplary formulation for endocrine health and thyroid support, and Seleno-Iodide, a synergistic blend of iodine and selenium, critical partners in thyroid and breast health.
The comprehensive formula, Thyrotain, contains L-tyrosine and iodine, which provide the backbone of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The synergistic blend of nutrients and botanicals contains vitamin A and guggulipid, along with zinc and selenium, all of which have been shown to activate enzymes that enhance this conversion. A deficiency of any of these nutrients can cause the thyroid to under-function. Selenium in particular has been linked to improved T4 to T3 conversion and decreased thyroperoxidase (TPO) antibodies in thyroid immunity. The formula uses the branded selenium ingredient SelenoExcell® from selenium-enriched yeast, which has been clinically studied and noted as a preferable, more bioavailable form to enhance efficacy.
Thyrotain also contains the antioxidants turmeric, vitamin C, E and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), to provide an additional boost to thyroid health by reducing free radical stress. Thyrotain has clinical applications to help maintain healthy thyroid function, promote synthesis of thyroid hormones and improve cellular sensitivity to thyroid hormones.
Seleno-Iodide is a synergistic blend with 3 mg of iodine combined with 100 mcg of selenium from SelenoExcell®, the highly bioavailable, organically bound selenium recognized as the selenium supplement that is closest to forms found in nature.
Iodine and selenium are both known for their important role in thyroid function. Iodine is necessary for synthesis of thyroid hormones, as an important component of both thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Research also shows that iodine acts as an antioxidant, supporting a healthy thyroid gland and protecting various tissues such as mammary tissues, eyes and the gastrointestinal lining.
Selenium is a critical partner in these functions. It is required to produce several important compounds including enzymes involved in antioxidant mechanisms and thyroid hormone metabolism. It is a required co-factor for three key enzymes involved in the production of thyroid hormones, which catalyze the release of iodine from T4 to increase production of the more metabolically active thyroid hormone T3. Low plasma selenium concentrations have been associated with impaired conversion of T4 to T3.
Seleno-iodide has clinical applications for support of thyroid health and the healthy synthesis of thyroid hormones as well as to help maintain healthy breast tissue.
